Dor Guez: Art Talk & Book Launch
Dor Guez, our current international International Artist-in-Residence, is a Jerusalem-born artist who lives and works in Tel Aviv, Israel. A lecturer in the History and Theory Department at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, he is also a researcher affiliated with Tel Aviv University. In 2009, Guez established the Christian Palestinian Archive, which forms the basis of much of his work and is the first archive devoted to this minority across the Middle East.

In late September, just before he began his Artpace residency in San Antonio, he opened Dor Guez: 100 Steps to the Mediterranean at The Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University in Boston—a solo exhibition of photography and video installations, and the Middle Eastern artist’s first major museum exhibition in the United States. He will give a lecture on Tuesday, October 30 at The Rose, coinciding with the release of an illustrated catalogue of 100 Steps, published by The New England Press.

On Saturday, November 3, Guez will discuss his work at Artpace, with an introduction by Dr. Gannit Ankori, Professor of Fine Arts at the Brandeis, as well as co-curator of 100 Steps and editor of the 100 Steps catalogue. The artist talk will be followed by a book signing.

Artist Appreciation Celebration
With Grand Marais
and DJ Mathematique

Every year, Artpace throws a special party just for our artist community. Of course we’ll have food, drinks, and open exhibitions for our friends and neighbors to enjoy. But this year is exceptional for three reasons: Erik Sanden, Joe Reyes, and Odie, who will be performing as Grand Marais—first with a full, interactive set at 9:30pm, then with exclusive music-as-therapy sessions in their van for an audience of one. The band will invite individuals (one at a time) into their vehicle for a brief interview, then will prescribe “the perfect song for that person at that moment,” before delivering just the right dose of music. Serenades include more than 200 original songs, as well as some covers.

Artpace has been an integral part of San Antonio for nearly 18 years now, and while we serve as an international laboratory for the creation and advancement of contemporary art, homebase is always here in our city—no matter how far-reaching our residencies and exhibitions may be. “Artpace is fortunate to be a part of a strong community of artists,” says Artpace Deputy Director Mary Heathcott. “Artists and their ideas have always been at the foundation of everything we do, and we thrive on their inspiration and support. It’s an honor for us to host this annual party to recognize their many important contributions.”

Old Places New Spaces Book Launch
The public is invited to The Esquire Tavern to attend the launch of Old Places New Spaces, a book that touts San Antonio’s appreciation of its historic residences. Co-authors David Strahan, Katharine McMillan, and Patricia Hart McMillan will also sign copies of the publication. A percentage of sales handled by The Twig Book Shop (including pre-event sales), will benefit Artpace.

Old Places New Spaces features 26 unique San Antonio residences, “all of which are historically significant,” says Strahan, a local architect. “Most are houses; some are apartments in repurposed commercial structures. Each house retains its Period façade—several the work of legendary San Antonio architects.” The book includes photographs of Artpace’s apartments, where our International Artists-in-Residents stay during their two-month residencies in San Antonio.
