Drawing Nature: The Next Generation
What happens when you cross a palm frond with a prickly pear cactus, or a pine tree branch with honeysuckle vines? The Artpace laboratory is open for you to invent new species. In this workshop, take a close look at Leigh Anne Lester's Window Works installation and work with the artist to cultivate your drawing and collage skills to create your own botanical illustrations in a whole new way. JD Emmanuel Performance
Internationally acclaimed electronic musician JD Emmanuel will perform original ambient compositions in a sunset performance on our rooftop. Emmanuel was invited to perform at Artpace by current International Artist-in-Residence J. Parker Valentine.
Known for his ambient synthscapes that explore the relationship between the mind and music, Emmanuel (also known as Time Traveler) is widely considered a pioneer of electronic music. Layering cyclical rhythms, samples from the natural environment, and improvisation, he builds multi-textual music he calls Electronic Minimal. He is best known for his seminal album, Wizards (1982). Drawing on his interest in metaphysics, his entire musical catalogue aims to expand consciousness resulting in enhanced creativity, and deepened meditation and relaxation.

Public Art
Join Cecilia Alemani (Donald R. Mullen, Jr. Curator and Director of High Line Art in New York City) and Cath Brunner (Director of public art program 4Culture, King County Cultural Services in Seattle) in a conversation moderated by Rochelle Steiner (professor at the Roski School of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles).
With the recent development of River North, the new Tobin Center for the Performing Arts under construction, and a new public transportation network by VIA Metropolitan Transit, the public space around the Tobin Center provides an opportunity to conceive a truly unique space that integrates public transit and public art.
This series of events is designed to give shape to the discussion and exploration of examples and ideas that relate to the present opportunity for public engagement in our city. These events include presentations and panels from invited speakers, as well as exploration of the design projects by a UTSA architecture graduate studio.
The February 8 Public Art talk will be held at the University of Texas at San Antonio Downtown Campus Durango Building, Southwest Room DB1.124. The series is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts Our Town initiative, in collaboration with VIA Metropolitan Transit, UTSA College of Architecture, Public Art San Antonio, Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, SAHEARTS, UTSA, and program partner Artpace San Antonio. All events are free and open to the public.
