Summer 2013 Hudson (Show)Room and Window Works Public Opening & Walk-through
HUDSON (SHOW)ROOM: ANYA GALLACCIO
Artist Anya Gallaccio returns to Artpace 16 years after her International Artist-in-Residence exhibition, they said there was a paradise way out west, debuted alongside projects by fellow residents Nancy Rubins and Kathy Vargas. Known for her site-specific installations that often incorporate organic material referencing the physical nature of the site, Gallaccio will unveil new work in the Hudson (Show)Room composed of native Texas rock.

WINDOW WORKS: MICHAEL MENCHACA
San Antonio-based artist Michael Menchaca’s colorful illustrations and videos draw inspiration from pictorial history books of ancient Mesoamerica known as “codices” that traced history, religion, and geography through a codified, symbolic language. Using this historical precedent, he creates a visual allegory to address sociopolitical issues surrounding the US-Mexican border. For Artpace’s Main Avenue windows, his multi-dimensional installation--"AUTOS SACRAMENTALES"--depicts self-sacrifice in homage to El Diedad del Queso, a rat god, and Aquilas, an eagle deity.

A walk-through with the artists begins at 7pm. Exhibitions are on view through September 1.

Fresh Art First members can access the FRESH ART FIRST Members-only Lounge all night to enjoy a cool specialty cocktail, tasty bites by Liberty Bar, and beats curated by special guest DJ MV. (Not a member? Join online today!)

You[th]Pace Teen Art Council
Capstone Project Public Opening

Artpace San Antonio is proud to announce the unveiling of new artworks by our 2012-13 You[th]Pace Teen Art Council participants. The exhibition, exploring themes of loss and discovery, was organized by the 15 students representing 11 schools across Bexar County selected for Artpace’s Semester Program, an after-school service-learning program that encourages high school students to delve deeper into Artpace’s exhibitions and programs.

Based at Artpace, the program offers student-driven, hands-on opportunities for teens to work creatively in a collaborative environment as they interact with arts professionals and work toward the completion of a capstone project. This exhibition is the culmination of the two semester-long program.

Camp Artpace Registration Deadline
At Camp Artpace, kids meet and work directly with past and present Artpace artists to gain fascinating insights into style, materials, and techniques—discovering that contemporary art can be anything. This summer, we're thrilled to announce a new partnership with San Antonio Makerspace that will turn Artpace into a contemporary art laboratory and give campers new technology as a way to make art. Campers look, learn, create, reflect, and MAKE art happen.

Camp Artpace is Monday-Friday from 9am-3pm daily. The $200 tuition includes all materials and snacks (lunch is not provided). Artpace FRESH ART FIRST Household members and above receive a 10% discount. The registration deadline for both Camp Artpace sessions is Friday, May 24. Full and partial scholarships, provided by H-E-B, are available. To register or inquire about scholarships, contact Artpace at 210.212.4900 or education@artpace.org. Or access our registration form under Education on our navigation bar (click Resources).
