Each year, Artpace presents its Happening, a creative twist on a gala celebration benefiting the non-profit’s renowned contemporary art programs. As a public charity, Artpace depends on the success of the annual Happening to sustain its free, dynamic programming. Please join us for an unforgettable evening that directly benefits Artpace’s residencies, exhibitions, and education efforts—and ensures Artpace continues to flourish.


2017 – Artpace Celebrates the Contemporary Art of Mexico City

Co-chairs: Juan and Patricia Ruiz-Healy
On April 8, 2017 Artpace will honor the long, rich history of artists and architects from Mexico, as well as highlight the esteemed contemporary artists who have passed through Artpace’s programs. All support given through this unforgettable evening directly benefit Artpace’s residencies, exhibitions, and education efforts. This year, Artpace will honor Eugenio López, President and Founder of Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, and Carla Stellweg, independent curator and writer with a focus on Latin American contemporary art.

2016 – The 21 Club

Co-chairs: Anna Wulfe and Christopher C. Hill
On April 9, 2016 Artpace brought together old and new friends to celebrate its 21st birthday at its annual fundraising gala, The Happening. Founded in 1995 by Linda Pace, Artpace officially came of age, turning 21 in 2016. To celebrate during , Artpace hosted clandestine Speakeasy events inspired by the 21 Club in New York leading up to its 21st-birthday, Speakeasy Happening.


2015 – Paris/Texas

Co-chairs: Lee Evans Lee and Rick Liberto
Honorees: Suzanne Deal Booth and Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler of Hubbard/Birchler
The theme of Paris/Texas referenced Hubbard/Birchler’s film Grand Paris Texas; it also commemorated designer Coco Chanel’s arrival in Texas in 1957, which launched a decades-long love affair between Texans and French fashion and culture. The evening celebrated the glamour of Paris with Texas flair.


2014 – Shanghai Swing

Co-chairs: Lori Dunlap and Lora Reynolds
Glamorous and intriguing Shanghai in a bygone heyday served as the theme for an evening that celebrated the international scope of the organization’s reach. Artpace guests knew how to Shanghai Swing when Artpace went East.


2013 – Come Glamping With Us

Co-chairs: Eric and Alice Carrington Foultz
You love creative expression and the thrill of the open road — so do we — which is why we were honored to take you “glamping” for Artpace’s 8th Annual Happening. Guests joined the caravan and claimed their campsites under the Artpace tent.


2012 – Art Is The Future

At Artpace, today’s artists set the foundation for tomorrow. Through our residency, exhibition, and education programs, the future is defined by creative culture, whether we’re nurturing the career of an emerging talent or engaging our youth audiences in conversations about contemporary art. In 2012 Artpace gave you a glimpse into a fantastical world where Art is the Future.


2011 – Under The Big Top

Honorees: Carolyn and Allan Paterson
Step right up and prepare to feast your eyes on the grand spectacle that delights and dazzles the senses! Artpace celebrated under the big top at the annual fundraising gala. Featuring overflowing libations, unexpected epicurean delights, and dancing at death-defying heights on the Artpace rooftop.


2010 – Quinceañera

Co-chairs: Teresita Fernandez and Rick Liberto
Honorees: Jeanne and Michael Klein
In our hometown of San Antonio, Quinceañeras are elaborate affairs celebrating 15th birthdays. With feasting, music, decadence, and lace, Artpace’s 2010 Happening took its cue from one of the most memorable milestones in life.


2009 – Je Ne Regrette Rien

Co-chairs: Lee Anthony and J. Travis Capps, Jr.
Inspired by the Olympia in Paris, and chanteuse Edith Piaf, who achieved legendary status on the famous music hall’s stage, guests celebrated with abandon as Artpace brought you Je Ne Regrette Rien.


2007 – In The Limelight

Co-chairs: Bruce and Janet Lennie Flohr
Honoree: Cesar Martinez
From colorful cocktails in the tent, to fiery cuisine in the galleries and red hot salsa on the cool rooftop, gala guests enjoyed a truly transcendent experience. Attracting a unique blend of community leaders, influential patrons of the arts, and business executives, this annual gala celebrated the spotlight shining on the art world.


2006 – The Black and White Ball

Chair: Guillermo Nicolas
Honorees: Linda and Edward Whitacre
An elegant evening of magnificent proportions was the setting as Artpace re-wrote a legendary cultural happening. Artpace was the place to see and be seen at the reincarnation of Truman Capote’s famed 1966 “Party of the Century,” The Black and White Ball.
