ARTPACE HOLDS ITS FIRST OPEN CALL TO TEXAS ARTISTS FOR THE
2005 INTERNATIONAL ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM
'By demonstrating so graphically the intermingling of art with other fields of human
endeavor, the ArtPace projects suggest how far we have come from the days when art
was supposed to remain within its own boundaries....'
-Eleanor Heartney
Expanding its commitment to fostering international dialogue for contemporary art
within Texas,
ArtPace, A Foundation for Contemporary Art | San Antonio is pleased to announce its
first open call for submissions by Texas artists for consideration in the 2005 International
Artist-in-Residence Program.
Since its opening in 1995, ArtPace has invited more than ninety artists at various
stages in their careers to participate in the International Artist-in-Residence program,
which welcomes three artists? from Texas, one from elsewhere in the United States,
and one from abroad?live and work in San Antonio for two months. ArtPace's goal
for the residency program is to give artists a space in which to imagine new ways to
work. The cutting-edge works produced at ArtPace are as likely to employ video, film,
found objects, performance, and light, as they are paint, stone, or metal.
A two-month residency at ArtPace includes travel expenses, a weekly living stipend,
a materials budget, an apartment, and studio/exhibition space. ArtPace provides resident
artists with fully equipped wood, metal, and computer graphic design workshops, as well
as technical and administrative support. The residency is followed by a two-month
exhibition of the project created, which is fully documented and accompanied by a full-
color exhibition brochure.
This is ArtPace's first open call to artists currently living in Texas for the
International Artist-in-Residence Program?the past, Texas artists have been
considered only through nomination by a panel of arts professionals. From this
application, a shortlist will be formed of contemporary artists whose work displays the
innovation that ArtPace cultivates. ArtPace's guest curators will review the work of the
short-listed artists, and each of the three curators will select one Texas artist for a 2005
residency.
Application and guidelines are posted in the Links section of this website, and are
also available by calling 210.212.4900.
