For nearly a decade, ArtPace has served as a creative laboratory for artists from
around the globe and a catalyst for the creation of significant art projects, so it is no
accident that 13 of the artists selected for the 2004 Whitney Biennial have shown at
ArtPace. That so many artists whose careers have been nurtured by a single institution
were selected for this seminal survey of American art is a testament to the caliber of
ArtPace's programs.
Curated by Chrissie Iles, Shamim M. Momin, and Debra Singer, the 2004 Biennial
exhibition, on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, March
11 through May 30, 2004, includes such noteworthy ArtPace fellows as Maurizio
Cattelan, Spencer Finch, Isaac Julien, Robyn O'Neil, Liisa Roberts, Dario Robleto, A•da
Ruilova, Yutaka Sone, and Erick Swenson. Additionally, the Biennial features works by
artists who have been included in exhibitions and programs at ArtPace: Jim Hodges, Julie
Mehretu, and Catherine Opie, have had one-person shows at ArtPace, and Deborah
Stratman's film In Order Not To Be Here was screened at On Screen at ArtPace.
ArtPace is no stranger to the Whitney Biennial?ce its opening in 1995, twenty
ArtPace alums and their work have been part of the Whitney's ongoing surveys of
contemporary art. Indeed, 2002 Biennial curator Lawrence Rinder named San Antonio as
a city with 'buzz and vitality' in the forward to that exhibition's catalogue?king San
Antonio and the Lone Star State as don't-miss destinations for contemporary art and
culture. In 2000 Franco Mondini Ruiz's ArtPace residency project Infinito Botanica
traveled to New York; in 2002 Christian Jankowski's The Holy Artwork landed in the
Biennial as well; this year Robyn O'Neil's monumental graphite on paper triptych is sure
to stand out. And San Antonians saw it first.
