Artpace San Antonio seeks Two (2) Summer 2007Graduate Curatorial Interns
Artpace San Antonio seeks two motivated art history or curatorial studies graduate students for paid summer internships. Artpace, a twelve-year old organization, serves as a laboratory for the creation and advancement of international contemporary art. Artpace believes that art is a dynamic social force that inspires individuals and defines cultures. Our residencies, exhibitions, and education programs nurture the creative expression of emerging and established artists, while actively engaging youth and adult audiences. Through our International Artist-in-Residence program (IAIR), we invite nine artists annually to participate in a two-month residency that supports the evolution of new ideas in art. Each residency is comprised of three artists? international artist, one living in the United States, and one from Texas. As a complement to IAIR, Artpace organizes four group or single-artist exhibitions of contemporary work each year in a fourth gallery, the Hudson (Show)Room. The impact of resident artists and exhibitions is extended and strengthened by yearly publications and a broad range of panels, lectures, artist talks, and school and community programs. Through these activities Artpace cultivates diverse audiences for contemporary art and provides a forum for ongoing dialogue in San Antonio.
The two graduate interns will work within the Curatorial Department and Director?office. For the 07.2 residency?fano Arienti (Milan, Italy), Lorraine O?ady (New York, NY), and Eduardo Mu–oz Ordoqui (Austin, TX)? interns will assist in authoring published materials, including gallery notes, press releases, and newsletters. The interns will also assist in programs, opening weekend events, and the institution?strategic planning process. Additional responsibilities include research of upcoming residencies, exhibitions, public programs, and grants. The interns will be an integral part of Artpace and will observe staff and program meetings. The interns will be encouraged to make studio visits with artists in San Antonio and to become familiar with the contemporary art community in Texas.
The successful candidates must be able to work both independently and collaboratively. We encourage applicants who will devote significant energy to the tasks at hand, but also bring to the table new ideas and creative solutions. A strong knowledge of contemporary art and exceptional verbal and written skills are required. Proficiency in reading and speaking Spanish is desirable. A $2,500 stipend will be offered for each student for the two month, full-time internship (June/July). Assistance in finding housing is available. Applications must be postmarked March 23, 2007. Successful applicants will be notified by April 20.
