San Antonio, Texas-Nathan Carter's first solo exhibition in Texas will open Thursday, October 25 in Artpace San Antonio's Hudson (Show)Room. THE COVERT CAVIAR FREQUENCY DISRUPTOR will feature seventeen wall relief sculptures, collages, and hanging objects constructed from a range of materials-paper, paint, plastic, plywood, and found parts-to create intricate maps and diagrams seemingly referencing complex systems of mass transportation, communication, and architecture.
The work is at once stridently cheerful and unsettling. Exuberant primary and nationalistic coloring and the confident gesturing of modernist greats such as Alexander Calder and Joan Miró, combine with collaged images of trains, planes, and passengers, and cryptic language and codes. Humorous and elaborate titles, such as "HANDMADE RUSSIAN RADIO HIDDEN IN COOKIE AND CEREAL PACKAGING FOR ADVANCED DIGITAL COVERT COMMUNICATION", and "TRAVELING LANGUAGE MACHINE WITH #3 FREQUENCY DISTRUPTOR AND DISINFORMATION NUMBERS STATION" allude to Cold War espionage and contribute to the dizzying visual cacophony that serves to lampoon the military industrial complex.
