San Antonio, TX- San Antonio-based artist Mark Hogensen has created a site-specific installation for Artpace's Main Avenue windows that explores both the domestic and professional aspects of our lives. In Home/Work, Artpace's windows are screened with a series of two-dimensional, black plywood forms. The wooden images, which depict exuberant, abstracted representations of domestic scenes, are sheathed in translucent fabric, resulting in a sequence of negatives that capture interior shadows by day and projected images by night. During business hours, onlookers from the street see the shapes of Artpace employees going about their daily routine; at night, four projections feature the profiles of human figures acting out domestic duties. By integrating these two activities, Hogensen expresses our negotiation of public and private spheres-conveying the variance of modern life.

About the Project
WindowWorks is an exhibition program in which Artpace annually commissions three local artists to produce site-specific projects for its windows that face downtown San Antonio's busy North Main Avenue. The program, which has been expanded in 2007 as part of the institution's strategic emphasis on support for local artists, demonstrates Artpace's commitment to extending the dialogue about contemporary art beyond traditional gallery spaces.
This exhibition is supported by The Brown Foundation, Inc. and Texas Commission on the Arts.
