Holiday Window is a collaborative educational program wherein Artpace commissions a notable artist and art students to work together to create an original artwork for its Main Avenue windows. The local artist is selected to mentor students through the creative process and their culminating project is displayed for a full month during the holiday season. This seasonal event is part of ArtElements, Artpace's K-12 programs for families, students, schools, and community organizations.
Artpace's 2008 Holiday Window features a snow white sculptural installation of a dining room table set for a family gathering. Created by students from Reagan High School's AP Studio Drawing and 2-D Design classes working with San Antonio-based artist Sarah A. Jones, the project illustrates the importance of family ritual at the heart of holiday celebrations across all cultures and faiths.
Showcased in Artpace's Main Avenue gallery, the mirrored dining room table is situated amidst a bank of snow mounded against the gallery's windows. Subtly peeking from the icy drift are silhouettes of plates, cups, and flatware. Through its stark minimalism, yet visually stunning presentation, Epiphany contradicts the often materialistic focus of the holiday season, instead guiding the viewer toward a realization of the universal significance of our shared values.
