Anya Gallaccio
Anya Gallaccio lives in London, England, where she was born in 1963. Educated at the
Kingston Polytechnic and Goldsmith's College at the University of London, Gallaccio is
among England's most sought-after artists of the "Thatcher's Children" generation. Over
15 solo exhibitions of her work have been presented throughout the United States and
Europe, including Karsten Schubert Gallery in London; The Institute of Contemporary
Art, London; Kim Light Gallery, Los Angeles; and Ars Futura Galerie, Zurich. Gallaccio
was included in the Walker Art Center's Brilliant! show that traveled to the
Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston in 1996, inSITE94 in San Diego and Tijuana;
and The British Art Show 4, organized by the Hayward Gallery in 1996.
For New Works: 97.1, Gallaccio has continued her investigations of form and
content through installation, now using barbed wire and salt. The piece, titled they said
there was a paradise way out west, fills the gallery space with a continuous chain of
barbed wire links, floating over a salt-covered floor. Similar to Gallaccio's daisy chain
pieces, the barbed wire links delicately move through the space, constraining the
viewer's movement while inviting interaction. With these materials, Gallaccio makes
specific reference to San Antonio's Mexico-Texas border culture, and to the physical and
emotional barriers society places on individuals and groups.
