Chalk It Up 2009

10.01.09

Bring the family downtown on Saturday, October 10, 2009, 10am to 5pm for the sixth annual Chalk It Up, a free, family-friendly event hosted by Artpace San Antonio. Join thousands of fellow art lovers as forty-two of San Antonio's premier visual artists turn our city sidewalks into works of art.

The community is invited to stroll down Houston Street between Main Avenue and S. Presa Street while taking in the gallery of chalk creations. The whole family can practice their skills on a public mural and express their creativity in the Freestyle section or at one of several Kidzone creation stations.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS
Presented by Artpace and Presenting Sponsor Target, Chalk It Up raises public awareness about contemporary art in a fun, casual environment while invigorating downtown San Antonio. This annual community event is made possible through the support of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, LLP, an anonymous donor, Brake Check, City of San Antonio's Office of Cultural Affairs, The Cultural Collaborative, KRTU, The Majestic Theatre, OLANA GROUP Fine Art & Design/Neel and Allison Hays Lane, Texas Commission on the Arts, Weston Centre, Zachry Holdings, Inc., and Artpace's Chalk It Up To You Facebook Supporters and We Need You to Chalk It Up donors. With in-kind support from Clear Channel Outdoor, Herweck's Art Supply, Hotel Valencia, KRTU 91.7FM Jazz for San Antonio, Mix 96.1FM, Q101.9FM, Ricos, Sip, and Target.

ARTISTS
Showcase Artists include some of San Antonio's most creative talents: Mark Aguilar, Holly Hein Brooks and Franklin Bryson Brooks, Ruth Buentello, Marlys Dietrick, Joey Fauerso, Charlie Morris, Justin Parr, Potter-Belmar Labs, Luis Valderas, and Johnny Villarreal. Using the sidewalks as their canvases, the artists will create monumental 15 x 20 ft. original abstract and representational images in chalk. The challenge of the format, the limit of time, and the pressure of a viewing public will undoubtedly lead these creators to formulate new and unexpected results in their work.

Additionally, South Texas' young artists are invited to collaborate on their own creations in the TeamWorks zone. Thirty-five school and community groups have signed up to participate including teams from Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas, East Central High School, Girl Scouts, Martinez St. Women's Center, Our Lady of the Lake University, and St. Mary's Hall Middle School National Junior Art Honor Society. While the mood of the works will vary by artist and team-from dynamic, figurative images to more reflective, quiet compositions-what will stay the same is the media: CHALK!

MUSIC, FOOD, AND MORE
There's something for everyone at Chalk It Up: performances by local DJs and local school groups will provide an energetic backdrop for the art-filled day, and fun, kid-friendly foods such as gorditas, nachos, and ice cream will be available.
