Press Release: 1999 International Artist-in-Residence Program

11.01.98

Contemporary art from around the globe premieres in San Antonio.

Documenta XI artistic director Okwui Enwezor selects artists for prestigious
international residency program.

ArtPace, A Foundation for Contemporary Art | San Antonio is pleased to announce our
residency and exhibition schedule for 1999. Each residency is comprised of an artist from
South Central Texas, an artist from elsewhere in the United States, and an artist from
abroad. The three artists live and work side-by-side, engaging in dialogue with each other
and the San Antonio arts community.

Guest Curator: Okwui Enwezor

One residency each year is selected by a guest curator. ArtPace has invited Okwui
Enwezor to select artists for the third residency of 1999, with projects scheduled to open
on September 9, 1999.

Nigerian-born, New York-based Okwui Enwezor has been named Artistic Director of
Documenta XI, which will take place in Kassel, Germany in 2002. Currently an
adjunct curator at the Art Institute of Chicago, he served as a juror for the Guggenheim
Museum's 1998 Hugo Boss Prize. He was the artistic director of the highly acclaimed
1997 Johannesburg Biennial and has curated a wide range of exhibitions for the
Guggenheim Museum, New York; KunstMuseum Bonn, Germany; and the Queens
Museum of Art, Queens, NY. The publisher and founding editor of Nka: Journal of
Contemporary African Art
, Enwezor is also a contributor to Flash Art, Atlantica,
Frieze, Third Text, Siski
, and aRude.

Enwezor's selections will showcase experimental work in new media and
installation. Oladˇlˇ Ajiboyˇ Bamgboyˇ, who lives and works in London,
investigates black masculinity and identity through photography, installation and video.
Liisa Roberts lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Her site-specific, conceptually
based film installations question the materiality of film and the moving image and the
physicality of architecture. Chris Sauter, from Boerne, TX, uses nontraditional
materials such as bread in his sculptural installations to challenge our notions of
architectural space.

Panel Selections

Every two years, members of the international art community are invited to nominate
artists for the International Artist-in-Residence Program. An independent panel of arts
professionals is then convened to select artists for participation in three of the four
residencies held each year. The participants of our first residency in 1999 were selected
by the 1996 panel,* whose members include Elizabeth Armstrong, David Avalos, Dana
Friis-Hansen, Thelma Golden and Maaretta Jaukkuri. The 99.2 and 99.4 artists were
chosen by the 1998 panel, whose members include Dan Cameron, Annette DiMeo
Carlozzi, Amada Cruz, Kellie Jones, Hans-Ulrich Obrist and Nancy Rubins.

International artists scheduled for the 1999 residencies include Mona Hatoum, the
London-based installation artist; filmmaker Isaac Julien, also from London; and
Australian Simryn Gill, who incorporates natural materials in her installations. Among
our national participants are veteran feminist artist Carolee Schneemann, who lives in
New Paltz, New York; Californian photographer Laura Aguilar; and Brooklyn-based
installation artist Sarah Sze. From Texas, we will welcome media artist George Cisneros,
based in San Antonio, TX; Regina Vater, an installation artist from Austin, TX; and
conceptualist Mel Ziegler, who also resides in Austin, TX.

1998 panel
