Press Release: Exhibition Schedule 2000

Schedule of Upcoming IAIR Artists and Exhibitions

Sun Jung Kim

Each year, one ArtPace residency is selected by a guest curator. Sun Jung Kim was
invited to choose three artists for New Works: 00.3, the third residency of 2000.

Sun Jung Kim is the Chief Curator of Art Sonje, a private contemporary art museum
with branches in Seoul and Kyungju. Since the museum opened in 1993, she has curated
over a dozen exhibits that have showcased emerging Korean artists working with
photography, video and new media. She is currently working on a large survey show with
David Ross, Director of the San Francisco Musuem of Modern Art, which focuses on
Korean-American artists.

After extensive studio visits in South Texas, Sun Jung Kim selected San Antonio
artist Dario Robleto for participation in the IAIR Program along with Yiso Bahc, from
Korea, and New York-based Yang-ah Ham.

Panel Selections

Artists participating in the remaining ArtPace residencies in 2000 were selected through
our panel selection process. Every two years, members of the international art
community are invited to nominate artists for the International Artist-in-Residence
Program. An independent panel of arts professionals is then convened to select artists
from the pool for participation in three of the four residencies held each year.

Artists for 00.1, 00.2, and 00.4 were selected by a panel that convened in March
1998. The panel included Dan Cameron, Senior Curator, New Museum of Contemporary
Art; Annette diMeo Carlozzi, Curator of American Art, Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art,
The University of Texas at Austin; Amada Cruz, Museum Director, Bard College Center
for Curatorial Studies; Kellie Jones, independent curator; Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Curator,
Musˇe d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France; and Nancy Rubins, artist and 1997
ArtPace resident.

The Artists

YISO BAHC lives in Seoul, Korea. His complex installations draw from institutional
architecture, using common materials and existing space.

MAURIZZIO CATTELAN, based in Milan, Italy, works in a temporal, performative
mode, often incorporating animals and staged happenings.

YANG-AH HAM resides in New York. Her video work considers time and duration in
relationship to nature.

JOHN HERNANDEZ, a native of San Antonio, makes dynamic sculpture combining
media imagery with the slick forms of commercial signage.

ARTURO HERRERA, based in New York, uses abstraction and representation, shifts in
scale and imagery associated with childhood and popular culture to create complex
installations.

REBECCA HOLLAND, based in San Antonio, creates site-specific installations made
with everyday materials that explore light and architecture.

JOACHIM KOESTER, based in New York, works with film and video, constructing
visually charged, ghosted images of the urban landscape.

JASON RHOADES lives and works in Ingelwood, CA. His large-scale sculptural
installations incorporate found objects and accumulated forms.

DARIO ROBLETO, based in San Antonio, combines personal history with an
investigation of DJ culture to create discrete, conceptually-oriented objects.

TRACEY ROSE, who lives in Johannesburg, uses a variety of media in her work,
exploring issues of racial and cultural identity after the end of apartheid.

MARGO SAWYER, based in Austin, explores systems and structures of architecture,
urbanity and spirituality.

YUTAKA SONE, based in Tokyo, is known for his hilarious performance- and action-
based work that examines social relationships and post-industrial existence.
