Artpace Artist Alumni Update

Our Alumni Artists have been up to a lot lately!

LA><ART will host a reception and book signing for the release of Crickets by Mungo Thomson, composed by Michael Webster, a musical score of Thomson’s current video exhibition at Artpace. The score and video are based on field recordings of crickets from around the world, resulting in a dynamic composition for a small orchestra.

The reception and signing will be held at Arcana: Books on the Arts at 8675 Washington Blvd., Culver City, California on Wednesday, February 26, 6-8pm. To RSVP, please email rsvp@laxart.org. Can’t make it to California? Come see Mungo’s exhibition Crickets for Solo and Ensemble, on view at Artpace through April 27, 2014.

Adriana Lara (International Artist-in-Residence Fall 2009) will be featured in a solo exhibition at Indipendenza in Rome, Italy. Titled Let’s not jump into concrete and curated by Eva Svennung, the exhibition will bring together new and existing pieces focusing on Lara’s investigation of “the relation between form and surface, language and meaning.” The exhibition will be on view through April 15, 2014.

The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston will present Outside the Lines: Rites of Spring, a group exhibition including Artpace alum Ulrike Müller (International Artist-in-Residence Spring 2010). One in a six-part series celebrating the museum’s 65th anniversary, Rites of Spring juxtaposes abstraction and representation through painting and photography as part of a dialogue on contemporary abstraction. Rites of Spring will be on view through March 9, 2014.

We were proud to see several Artpace Alumni in Art Matters’ 2013 Grant Program, which awards grants of $3,000-$10,000 to U.S. artists engaging with social issues, focusing on artists including subversive content and non-traditional media. The 2013 recipients included Glenn Kaino (International Artist-in-Residence Spring 2007), Nina Katchadourian (Hudson (Show)Room Spring 2002), Ulrike Müller (International Artist-in-Residence Spring 2010), and Carolee Schneemann (International Artist-in-Residence Spring 1999).
