Artpace’s inaugural Performance Artist-in-Residence, Amalia Ortiz will reveal new work in response to the multi-institution exhibition, Common Currents, at Artpace.
Litany for the Fruits of the Land: A Redemptive Remembrance
Adapted from Paulo Freire and practiced in Mexican American Studies programs now banned in Arizona, “redemptive remembrance” describes the act of seeking redemption for our humanity through collective reflection on our history. An interactive ceremony of song, movement, storytelling, essay, and ritual, this event invites audiences to celebrate the original inhabitants of this continent and the fruits of the land which helped them to survive and thrive. Featuring texts by Carmen Tafolla, Gloria Anzaldua, and Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, original poetry by Amalia Ortiz, and performances by Nicolas Valdez and Maria Ibarra, it is a prayer of thanks to la madre tierra.
The performance is free and open to the public.
Artpace has free parking at 513 N Flores.
