BLACKKIRBYPlease join us for a reception and book signing at Artpace, this Friday lunch hour Noon-1:30 p.m., to help celebrate the visit of Black Kirby to Dr. Kinitra Brooks’s Afrofuturism 2.0 class at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Walk-ins welcome.

Black Kirby is a collaborative entity that is John Jennings and Stacey “Blackstar” Robinson, centered on themes of Afrofuturism, social justice, representation, magical realism, and the culture of Hip Hop as a methodology for creating visual communication. Black Kirby uses comics to function as a rhetorical tool by appropriating original Marvel and DC comics artist Jack Kirby’s bold forms and energetic ideas. John Jennings is Professor of Media and Cultural studies at the University of California at Riverside, and Stacey Robinson is Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Champaign.

Dr. Kinitra Brooks is Associate Professor in the Dept. of English at UTSA, Series Editor of New Suns and Founding Editor of Black Speculative Digital Archive.

The Black Kirby reception occurs as part of current Artpace Artist-in-Residence Nicholas Frank’s project, Siteweb, with special thanks to Kinitra Brooks.
