Spring 2023 Ekphrastic Poetry

Trinity University creative writing students enrolled in English Professor Jenny Browne’s special topics course on Ekphrastic Practice class have spent this semester considering the classical tradition of ekphrasis–which generally refers to writing in response to visual art–as well as its contemporary creative possibilities. In asking both why and how one might connect the verbal with the visual, students also considered the relationship between subject and object, the power dynamics inherent in looking and being looked upon, and what we mean by representation itself. This generative course has included field trips to a number of San Antonio art venues, and Browne’s students were especially moved by engaging with, and developing work in response to ArtPace’s spring exhibitions.
