Recently Artpace hosted a free Teen Artist Workshop, which focused on zine making led by artists Mark Menjivar and Jason Reed. Exploring context, reproduction, and the cultural meaning of images, students in this workshop created zines using ideas gleaned from John Berger’s Ways of Seeing and Mungo Thomson’s current Artpace exhibition, Crickets for Solo and Ensemble. Students examined the history of the zine as a mode of social critique and public art, while also constructing their own zines using collage, drawing, and photography. Two members of the 2013-2014 You[th]Pace Teen Art Council also led the group of workshop attendees on a tour of Thomson’s exhibition. At the end of the workshop, each participant was able to make five full-color copies of their zine using Artpace’s copy machine.
