Artist Spotlight: Kang Seung Lee

Artist Spotlight: Kang Seung Lee

Where are you from?

I was born in South Korea and have lived in Australia, India, Turkey, and Mexico before moving to Los Angeles, California where I currently live and work.

How would you describe your subject matter?

I am interested in creating visual marks, traces, and indices of marginalized individual experiences. I also create personal histories that intervene ordered systems and challenge singular mainstream knowledge.

What inspired you to become an artist?

Hard to answer. Instead, I prefer to tell you about people who inspire me. I’ve always been inspired by Young Jean Lee, Rei Kawakubo, Leigh Bowery, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Jimmie Durham, Leslie Dick, Unsuk Chin, Young Chung and many more.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

Tough question – it only rains a few days each year in Los Angeles, and I get super moody when it rains.

Meet Kang at Open Studios, June 13 from 6:00-8:00pm.
